2011 was a great year for music; with so many new albums and upcoming artists, it was almost impossible to keep up with it all. Although I’m not a fan of doing year-end lists, I thought it might be fun to put together a mix of songs from a few of the artists I enjoyed most, in no particular order.
Amazing remix by Architecture in Helsinki. Cut Copy’s normally fast-paced, upbeat tune now sounds vaguely reminiscent of David Byrne/Talking Heads with Dan Whitford crooning out the lyrics over soft steel drum melodies.
Foster the People opened for Cut Copy last Thursday night at Prospect Park and totally stole my heart with this excellent cover of Weezer’s hit, ‘Say It Ain’t So.’
While I was a bit unsure of how I felt about Foster the People going into the show, these guys brought so much energy and excitement to the stage they had me quickly converted to a fan.
Don’t know how I haven’t heard this song before, considering how much I love Cut Copy. I think what I like most about it is how un-Cut Copy it is and how raw it sounds in some parts throughout. The guitar twang especially is probably the most unique aspect of the song — reminds me a bit of Dinosaur Jr.’s “Feel The Pain”
This isn’t really a New Years resolution, but more of something that I’ve been meaning to do for a while… A friend and I have decided (or just stated out loud) that we’re going to try to go see more bands who we aren’t familiar with, and for as cheap as possible.
